Lilah

Once I finally sat on the bar stool long enough to get up and walk out the front without falling over I left. The photographers were still outside and they flashed their cameras in my face and yelled at me. Bright lights blinded and the pounding of my head increased tenfold. I wanted nothing to do with this life and yet here I was stuck like a fly in a trap.

“Where’s your prince, why are you drinking alone Delilah.” A man shouted shoving himself closer to my personal space.

“Will the king be walking you down the aisle or will you be alone?”

Wincing I backed away and tried to get around them with no luck. This situation was shit and the fault of one prickly prince I wanted nothing to do with. If this was how the rest of my life was going to go, I’d be better off finding a cliff and taking a jump right over it into oblivion.

“Delilah, look over here. How much did you have to drink?”

I started walking. I couldn’t determine what was wrong with me. Why did I care if he left? I could call a press conference and talk about his infidelity and end everything immediately. It might shame the royal family beyond repair but what the hell did I care? It wasn’t as if they were concerned over my wellbeing and happiness. I was nothing more than a loyal subject forced to do her duty.

“Delilah,” I heard someone yelling my name and tried to see around the photographers.

“Who is that?” I yelled back.

“It’s Matthew, hold on,” I tried to place who Matthew was in my state of mind. Dizziness assaulted me with a fresh wave of nausea. A tall handsome man pushed through the crowd of photographers and grabbed my hand. “Come on,” he pulled me with him out of the fray and helped me into a car he’d stopped in the middle of the street. He looked familiar but my mind drew a blank as he gently forced my head down and guided me inside the sleek black car with blacked out windows.

“Get out of the way you asshole,” some pleasant lady yelled as he shut my door. His body forced the crowd to part and get out of his way. The horns were loud and I laughed as he strolled back slowly to the driver’s side without a care.

Today was getting more ridiculous by the minute.

“Who are you?” I asked peering over the backseat and divider.

He huffed sitting for a minute before pulling the car out into traffic unheeding the throng of photographers who darted back when he didn’t stop.

“My lady, you should know better than to get in the car with strangers.”

I squinted my eyes.

“Matthew?”

“Security detail. Your prince rang.” He waved a cellphone in his hand and I flounced back against the seat of the car feeling the wave of exhaustion come over me. Sam, of course. He saved me despite leaving me there. Always so damn thoughtful after the fact.
